History
Earl Fearchar's grandson William led a tribe at a Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Hugh, a Fifth earl, was flushed at a Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, and his successor William died forgoing male issue. A earldom of Ross & a chiefship of Clan Ross were so separated:
a earldom of Ross passed across a female line, & that late led to dispute between 2 rival claimants -- a Lord of the Islet & Regent Albany -- & the title reverted to the crown within 1424. King James I of Scotland restored the title to Margaret, whose boy was Alexander, Tertiary Lord of the Islet. & a earldom of Ross remained sustaining a Lords of the Islet until that lordship was forfeited to the crown within 1476.
A chiefship passed to Earl William's brother Hugh Ross of Rariches, world health organization was granted the charter, inside 1374, for the lands of Balnagowan. A Rosses of Balnagowan held a chiefship for 300+ years. David, a previous of that directly line, passed a chiefship to Hon.
